  • 40 headshots per person
  • About an hour from selfies to download
  • Nobody on the team needs an account

University staff directories are among the most-visited pages a department has, read by prospective students, collaborators and journalists looking for someone to quote. They are also, almost everywhere, a patchwork: conference photographs, decade-old portraits, empty placeholders for people who never sent anything. The scale is the problem, since a department of eighty is impossible to photograph in one sitting. Starkie Teams sidesteps it by generating each person from selfies on their own phone, inside a style the department fixes once.

The result

Everyone, in the same light.

Choose a backdrop and an outfit once. Every person who joins is generated inside that style, so the team page finally looks like one team rather than a collage of whoever had a photo.

Department pages that stop being a patchwork

A staff listing is read comparatively: a visitor scans forty entries looking for the right specialism, and inconsistent photographs make the page harder to read rather than merely less pretty. Because everyone is generated inside one shared style, backgrounds and framing align across professors, postdocs and administrative staff alike.

Everyone chooses their own frame out of the 40 they are sent, which tends to matter where people are photographed for research profiles, conference programmes and press comment as well as the department site.

One link for a department of eighty

Administration creates the organisation, picks the style, then circulates a single open invite link restricted to the institution’s own email domain, so anyone with a valid address can join without being individually listed first.

People who need chasing get automatic reminders, and staff who are on sabbatical or based at another site take part from wherever they are. Named invitations by email work in parallel for the cases where a specific list matters, such as a new cohort of doctoral students.

Consent, records and deletion

Institutions have to be able to say how a photograph was obtained. Consent is given by the individual, in writing, before a single file moves, and the exact version they agreed to is kept on record: amend the wording and everyone is asked afresh.

Uploaded selfies are erased when the retention period expires and images open only through expiring links. Deletion is the individual’s to request rather than the department’s to administer, and the private page in each invite handles it and returns written confirmation.

As it happens

Every person, at their own pace.

People upload when it suits them. The organiser watches the set fill up and approves sets as they come in; nobody waits for a studio slot.

Frequently asked questions

Can each department choose its own style?

The style is set per organisation, so a department that wants its own look runs its own organisation. An institution that wants one consistent look across faculties sets it once and invites everybody into the same organisation.

Do we need a list of everyone before we start?

No. The open invite link is restricted to your email domain, so people can join themselves. Named email invitations are available too, and both routes end up in the same organisation with the same style.

How is this priced at department scale?

Per person, not per department: $39, with 30% off from twenty-five credits, 40% from one hundred and half from two hundred and fifty. Eighty faculty in one department therefore buy at 30%; an institution pooling several departments reaches the next rung quickly.

Can we push the photos into our own web system?

There is a single archive to download, organised by person and described by a manifest, and a JSON API that enumerates members and returns their images or branded picture; signed webhooks announce each set as it becomes ready.

Give the whole team the same headshot, without the shoot day.

Free to set up: you only pay when you buy credits. There is no subscription, and you don't need a card to start.
