Every company has an internal directory that was supposed to help people find each other and instead shows two hundred grey initials. Avatars are the part of an HR system nobody owns: HR assumes IT will handle it, IT assumes people will upload their own, and most people never do. Coverage is the metric, not artistry
A directory works when nearly everyone is in it. That is a participation problem, and participation is why photo days fail: the people who miss the session are the ones who travel, work part-time or joined last month.
Running it from a phone link removes every reason not to take part, and the people page shows coverage at a glance, with automatic reminders and a one-click nudge for whoever is still missing. Each person gets 40 frames and picks their own, so nobody is represented by an image they did not choose.

Branded profile pictures, generated for everyone
Internal tools want a square or circular avatar, often with a ring or a badge in the company colour. Defining a brand template once (colour, crop shape, ring, badge position, logo) produces a branded profile picture for every eligible person at two sizes, straight from the headshot they chose.
Change the template later and every branded picture is regenerated from the headshots already chosen, so a colour swap is not an afternoon in an image editor times two hundred people.

Getting it into the systems that need it
Bulk-loading avatars is the step where these projects usually die. The whole directory comes down as one archive, one folder per person, with a manifest that names every file including the branded picture, which is enough for most bulk import tools to work from unattended.
For anything automated, the JSON API enumerates members and hands back their images and branded picture, while signed webhooks report a finished set or a fresh round of branded renders, so the directory keeps itself current. That turns the annual avatar clean-up into something continuous rather than a project somebody has to schedule and staff each year.

Frequently asked questions
What sizes do the branded profile pictures come in?
Two, produced together: a larger one and a smaller one, so a directory can use the same asset for a profile page and for a list row. The crop can be circular, rounded or square, with an optional ring, badge and logo.
What happens if someone changes their favourite photo later?
The branded picture is rebuilt from whichever headshot is currently theirs, so selecting a different favourite refreshes it rather than leaving a stale avatar behind.
Can we roll this out department by department?
Yes. Invitations go out whenever suits, and each person draws a single credit, so one department can go first and the rest follow. Everyone is generated inside the same stored style, so the batches match.
How much for two hundred people?
Two hundred credits clears the hundred-credit threshold, so the directory is filled at 40% off $39. Another fifty would reach the largest reduction, half, which is worth checking against next year’s headcount.
